Best Practices :

Yoga & Meditation

As a part of new curriculum which has been came into practice in the year 1997, a three day Citizenship Training Camp has to be organises in nearby village. During camp, early morning student-teachers have to participate in Yoga and Meditation classes. A yoga expert has employed for this purpose. The programme was successful and students were experienced the fruitful result of such activities. That prompted us to introduce Yoga and Meditation as our beginning activity of the college before prayer.

Objectives

To provide the basic knowledge of yoga and meditation for student teachers.
To refresh students teacher’s mind for classes.
To help them maintain good physical and mental health.

Procedure

Every day before commencement of the classes’ student teachers will assemble in a hall and participate in yoga and meditation. The basic knowledge and training is provided by our physical education director. He also supervises the classes. Both yoga and meditation are practiced everyday for 30 minutes.

Impact

Though it’s short period exercise, the result we observed was very interesting. Student teachers are fresh and look free from mental stress. They are started take active part in theory classes. They also started attending yoga and meditation classes without much absent. As a result attendances to the theory classes are also increased. We have been practicing yoga and meditation for students since 12 years.

Thought for the Day

In 1998, some faculty members of our college have attended refresher course in Simla, Himachal Pradesh. During refresher course, participant has to quote on rotation the thought of the great personalities. A brief explanation was required to present by the same participant. The practice followed at the beginning of the day’s proceedings. Such activities stimulate serious discussion among the participants. Staff members were impressed by this and proposed the same to Principal and requested to implement in our college to the student teachers. The proposal was unanimously accepted by all staff member and brought into practice.

Objectives

To enable the trainee teachers to familiar with themselves the great thoughts by the great persons.
To enable the students teacher to interpret and explain the thoughts in meaningful way.
To reduce the stage fear of the trainee teachers and make them acquaint with stage proceedings.

Proceedure

“Thought for the Day” begins with beginning of academic year. At beginning, every day each staff member on rotation has to prepare and present the thought to students and teachers who gathers for prayer. Such act helps fresh students to acquaint themselves the way and method of presenting quotes. Soon after staff members presentation was over, one of the students whose name appears first in attendance register, will inform to prepare and to be ready for the presentation. Sufficient time will be provided for preparation. A day before his/her presentation they are informed to show the draft to any one of the staff and get it corrected. This practice is being observed every day since 14 years.

Impact

In colleges like teacher education, teacher aspirants are expected to acquire some skills which are essential for teaching profession. Presenting a thought to a group will certainly reduce the fear and helps to speak fluently. It also helps in preparation of lessons and delivering it successfully. More number of students are appreciated the procedure and express that they have learned the skill of explanation by doing so.
